References to the parish of Liberton, Midlothian in the marriage register of the parish of Canongate, 1564-1800

[Source: The register of marriages for the parish of Holyroodhouse or Canongate, 1564-1800]

The marriage register of the Canongate parish is blank Aug 1567 - May 1600; Aug 1631 - Oct 1645; Jul 1675 - Nov 1685. Also, there were no marriages performed Aug 1650 - Jun 1651.

The date given is most likely the date of booking, prior to proclamation
pro. = date of proclamation of banns
m. = actual date of the marriage
d. = daughter; p. = par. = parish; pro. = proclaimed

Each marriage is listed twice, in alphabetical order of the parties in column 1; spelling is not consistent between the 2 entries for any given marriage. The spelling in column 1 has been, in part, modernised.

Note that there is also a parish in Lanarkshire called, in modern spelling, `Libberton'. It is possible, though unlikely, that some of the entries in the table relate to that Lanarkshire parish. One cannot tell, from the spelling in the Canongate register, which parish is meant, as both parishes were spelt in the past indiscriminately with one or two `b's. Bridgend, Green End, Nether Liberton and Over Liberton are all in Liberton MLN.
